  • Melvin M. Stone ’40M, ’37WSC and his wife, Shirley, recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary and are enjoying all their great grandchildren. 

  • Joseph H. Press '41, ’37WSC, Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine, retired after 67 years in practice.  His suite held a dinner in March in his honor that included his wife, Pat, and sons, Steven Press and Robert A. Press, Ph.D., M.D. ’73, Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine and Chief Medical Officer at NYU Langone Medical Center. 

     
    Edmund D. Pellegrino ’44, John Carroll Professor Emeritus of Medicine and Medical Ethics, Georgetown University, and Chairman of the President’s Council on Bioethics, received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from The College of New Rochelle on April 24, 2008. 

  • Dr. Pellegrino received his B.S. degree from St. John’s University.  He completed his residencies in medicine at Bellevue, Goldwater Memorial and Homer Folks Tuberculosis Hospitals, following which he was a research fellow in renal medicine and physiology at NYU.  He has served as President and Chairman, Board of Directors, Yale-New Haven Medical Center; Professor of Medicine at Yale University; Chancellor and Vice President for Health Affairs, University of Tennessee; Professor of Medicine and Medical Humanities, University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences; Vice President for the Health Sciences, Dean of the School of Medicine, Director of the Health Sciences Center, Professor of Medicine, State University of New York, Stony Brook; Professor and Chairman, Department of Medicine, University of Kentucky Medical Center; and President of the Catholic University of America.  Simultaneous with his significant administrative responsibilities he pursued active electrolytic research. 

  •  Dr. Pellegrino has authored over 585 published items in medical science, philosophy, and ethics and is a member of numerous editorial boards.  He is the author or co-author of 22 books and the founding editor of the Journal of Medicine and Philosophy.  As philosopher and physician, he has challenged contemporary society to examine the essential nature of healthcare, especially the healing relationship between physician and patient.  He has been called the patriarch of modern medical morality.
