SIMON KARPATKIN, M.D., Class of 1958
I have been happily married to Margaret Karpatkin for over 43 years; we have 2 children, David and Judith. Margaret is a tenured Professor of Pediatrics and Medicine at NY Medical Center and Head of the Coagulation laboratory at Tisch Hospital. She devotes her time to teaching and patient care as well running the Clinical Lab.
I am currently a tenured Professor of Medicine and Director of the Hematology Program at NYU for the past 13 years. We have NIH Training grant for 5 fellows and admit 6 fellows each year for Hematology/Oncology Training. I am also actively involved in teaching as well as bench research on Platelet Immunology (Cell 106: 551, 2001: JCI 113: 973, 2004) as well as the Role of Thrombin in activating tumor growth, adhesion, angiogenesis and metastasis (Cancer Cell 10: 355, 2006).
I have had NIH support for 35 years. My daughter Judith is happily married to Lawrence Katzman, who works for Columbia P and S in their auditing department. My daughter Judith is working for Legal Aide of New York City- defending the poor of NYC who have been arrested. My son David is single and an avid sailor/sea captain. He recently returned to college and graduated with Honors. He has trained to become a high school teacher, majoring in English and History. He is a published poet. David is currently in Dallas, Texas working for Teach America, a non-profit organization that solicits teachers for unpopular areas.
Margaret and I enjoy sailing (we have a 35 foot Beneteau sail boat) as well as skiing (just returned from a skiing vacation in Zermatt, Switzerland). Margaret enjoys cooking and is a wine maven. We therefore eat and drink well!
