ALAN LEVINE, M.D., Class of 1958

In December 2006 I retired from the solo, private practice of ophthalmology in Brooklyn.   I operated at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary  for 30 years and had a final ranking of Senior Attending Surgeon.  Early in my career, I served for 13 years as Chief of Ophthalmology at the Brooklyn Veterans Administration Hospital.  I am very grateful for the vast breadth and depth of experiences in the office, OR, and at both institutions.  Teaching the residents was particularly satisfying.

I always loved ophthalmology with its delicate surgery, wide range of patient age groups, and fascinating neurological and general medical implications.   Perhaps the greatest reward was caring for so many wonderful people all these years.

One month after retiring, Sara and I moved to New Jersey in order to be closer to our children and 4 grandchildren.  We see them all very frequently, and derive much enjoyment in sharing more actively in their life activities.  Deep in my heart I belong to Brooklyn, but the new lifestyle in Jersey has proven to be easy and wonderful.

Sara and I are avid nature photographers, and have traveled extensively around the world and in the US with cameras (now digital) and tripods in tow.  One of the most memorable experiences occurred right here in New York in 1986 when we received permission to photograph the Statue of Liberty on 2 occasions from atop the scaffolding during the Lady’s restoration on the occasion of her 100th Anniversary.  One of the photos is shown below.

Sara is a talented artist currently working in mosaics.  I do welded metal sculpture and find it totally absorbing. In addition, I have studied graphology for over 25 years, and have served as the President of the American Society of Professional Graphologists.  Music has been, and always will be, an important part of my life.

Every 5 years for the past 40 or so, I have had the honor and pleasure of serving as the Class Chair for our Reunions.  Gerry Gellin has joined me as Co Chair for the 50th, and we both are busy, having fun and enthusiastically engaged in making this Reunion the most enjoyable, fulfilling, and memorable one of all.

Both Gerry and I have submitted our articles to the website and we encourage all of you to submit yours.  Thanks, be well, and we look forward to seeing you at the Reunion on April 12, 2008.
