KENNETH C. NIEBERG, M.D., Class of 1958
After graduation I served a medical internship on the Third/NYU Division at Bellevue followed by residency training in Pathology, one year at Montefiore Hospital and three years at Bellevue. Two years in the Army were served at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology and Walter Reed General Hospital in D.C. I then practiced pathology for 5 years at Muhlenberg Hospital in Plainfield, N.J. We then decided to move to Los Angeles in 1970, after shoveling snow off 120 feet of driveway to reach a pathology meeting at the idyllic Ambassador Hotel in LA. I have been in the group practice of pathology in LA since then, now serving as Director of Laboratory/Pathology and senior pathologist at several community hospitals. In 1979 I was a co-founder of Pathology Associates Laboratories, an independent laboratory, which is now part of Quest Diagnostics, a national laboratory. At present I have cut my practice to half time which allows a relaxed breakfast, leisurely reading of the paper and time to cycle and walk the family Labrador Retriever.
I met my wife Roberta, a first year student at NYU during my senior year and, similar to several of our classmates, we were married around graduation time. This results in concurrent 50th Anniversaries and Reunion. She also pursued a career in pathology. She was a Professor of Pathology at UCLA Medical School and was at UCLA and UCLA-affiliated hospitals for 27 years before becoming Professor Emerita in 1998. Since then she has practiced pathology part time in our Group. At UCLA Roberta was Director of Cytopathology and specialized in Ob-Gyn Pathology and practiced general surgical pathology. Sharing our professional interest for the last 50 years, particularly when we both love and enjoy pathology, has been a marvelous asset to our lives.
Another cherished part of our lives has been our family. We have three children: Karen, a musician who performs cabaret and musical theater and teaches voice at Santa Monica College and privately ; Benjamin, an attorney specializing in educational law; and Paul, an internist physician specializing in Infectious Disease. All the children are married and there are 5 grandchildren and a 6th at the prenatal stage. Ben lives in San Diego and the other two are in LA.
My main avocation is bicycling. We have taken several family bike tours in the US, Europe and Nova Scotia. I belong to local bicycle clubs and am biking most weekends. We enjoy reading, movies, theater, music, traveling, visiting with family and friends and walking our Labrador Retriever, Tootsie.
